How to compile the linux kernel in ubuntu-9.10 running under vmware player

Hi,
   I have installed ubuntu-9.10 using iso image under vmware player. Could
you please let me know how to compile the linux kernel in ubuntu-9.10 under
vmware player and boot the ubuntu-9.10 with the newly built kernel under
vmware player.
