trouble with installation of ubuntu

hi.i have windows xp and wanted to install ubuntu 9.10.
i installed it just like i saw on the internet.the problem is that it seems
id didn't install and why? because windows xp always boot and when i look
into the hardisk, i don't see any 25gb that i allocated for ubuntu.when i
try to reinstall ubuntu (the first time i selected install side by side) i
choose partition manually and gave it the same size and ext4 file type and
mount ponit "/" and the boot loader install on hd0,0.
but still no ubuntu boot up
i have 2 hardisk.one sata and one ide
the sata drive is divided to 2 partition.i want to install the ubuntu along
with the xp
can someone help with it
