antivirus software: how do you actually install it?

if you want to install a anti-virus software you might want to start 
with clamav. It is available as ubuntu package so installing is very easy:

https://help.ubuntu.com/community/ClamAV
if you want/need a gui install the clamtk package, too.

I am not really found of proprietary security application.

Be advised that anti virus software is an additional vulnerability:
