Hint/tip.

Found it a bit embarrassing that I could use the video & internal mic on
my new HP G60-530US laptop in Win7, but couldn't get the internal mic to
work with Ubuntu karmic 9.10...

The laptop has a built in webcam so I loaded up Cheese & guvcview to
test the webcam & microphone. No luck. Spent most of the afternoon
sorting through the bug reports, google etc., [1] and fiddling with
alsamixer in the terminal, but still couldn't manage to get the internal
mic to work.

I finally installed gnome-alsamixer and that gave me the option to
select the second mic source (tick the box); something that I couldn't
figure out how to do in standard alsamixer. And now the internal mic is
working just fine. So, if others are having similar issues, give
gnome-alsamixer a try.
Only problem is that I now have a few test video's of my ugly mug
w/sound that I'll immediately shred shortly :-)

For reference, my sound on the system is:
        *-multimedia
             description: Audio device
product: 82801I (ICH9 Family) HD Audio Controller
             vendor: Intel Corporation
             physical id: 1b
             bus info: pci at 0000:00:1b.0
             version: 03
             width: 64 bits
             clock: 33MHz
capabilities: pm msi pciexpress bus_master cap_list
             configuration: driver=HDA Intel latency=0
             resources: irq:22 memory:d4700000-d4703fff

and under Win7 it's showing as:
Conexant Pebble High Definition SmartAudio
Intel(R) High Definition Audio HDMI
