antivirus software: how do you actually install it?

I noticed there was some discussion about antivirus software.
So far I have not yet installed any (because I am not yet past the stage
of setting up linux)
However, I would like to install one. Someone mentioned "Avira" and I
found they have a free version (to give it a try).
Now:
I run Ubuntu 9.04, Japanese localized verion.
Downloaded the software.
(the synaptic thing did not work)
Somehow "untarred" the package.
Now I have on the desktop a folder that apparently contains all the
elements of the software.
BUT, how do I install the software?
There is a file named "install" -> property = application/x-shellscript
I do imagine I have to do something with that file.
But what?
Clicking on it does not do anything, nor does "open".
On the website of the software provider I could not find any
instructions and the
"readme" file only lists the files in the folder.
So, is there a way a non-computer expert like me can accomplish this?
