Thanks for the replies...
I hadn't thought of Fn/F7 - as I'm a former Thinkpad user and my
present machine is Lenovo, I should have. The facility is there but
it didn't help.
I have tried both plugging in the monitor before and after booting,
with the same result each time.
But when I looked in the log file Christoph pointed out, there are a
lot of lines ending "exceeds panel dimensions". So I guess that the
answer is that the card cannot cope with the monitor. We'll see what
happens when my new laptop arrives.
