mail notification pop-up too large

Folks,

with Gnome 2.28.1 and Thunderbird 2.0.0.24 on Ubuntu 9.10 my mail 
notification pop-up alert is large.  I have all the extras for the 
pop-up off in 'preferences'.
I've seen this question before somewhere but : how can you control 
attributes of that notification?
