Trouble in accessing `/home/USERNAME/.Xauthority'

And? Still confused by your comment. .Xauthority is created on any ssh
-X login to the machine. xauth
(http://manpages.ubuntu.com/manpages/karmic/en/man1/xauth.1.html) can be
used to manage it - but I do not know enough about it to use it), and as
demonstrated the commands work just fine:

sudo lfwsetup
sudo ln -fs ~/.Xauthority /root/.Xauthority
sudo chown USERNAME.root ~/.Xauthority
(you will have to replace USERNAME with your username)

and work in 9.10 and 10.04 (providing of course that an ~/.Xauthority
file exists first). So please clarify/justify:

"Step 4 will only work in Ubuntu pre 9.10."
