My guess is that you have the same sound chip/set as I do in my HP
G60-530US. Can you open a terminal and please provide the output from:

$ aplay -l
$ sudo head -n 1 /proc/asound/card0/codec*
$ modinfo snd_hda_codec_conexant
$ lspci -v | less
(post just the 'Audio' section)

Also, please install gnome-alsamixer:
$ sudo apt-get install gnome-alsamixer
You'll then find it in Applications|Sound & Video|GNOME ALSA Mixer - try
adjusting your Master & PCM to see if that will get you sound.

In System|Preferences|Sound I have the following in the hardware tab:
Internal Audio
1 Output
Analog Stereo Output
Profile: Analog Stereo Output.
