The Linux kernel has its own software RAID system which is far more
versatile than most inexpensive so-called "firmware RAID" systems
integrated into ordinary PC or workstation motherboards. Sometimes you
may still find proper hardware RAID controllers onboard, but only on
expensive high-end workstation or server-class motherboards, as the
chips alone cost more than a hard disk or two these days.

Don't bother with motherboard RAID. Use the software RAID that is built in.

This way, if you need to, you can move the disks to another machine if
the motherboard fails, too. You can't do that with firmware RAID or
even many hardware RAID setups unless you have an *identical* host
machine.
