Audio line-in produces no output

I solved this for my desktop using alsamixer to unmute the line-in.  It 
had a specific "Line-In" control.  The laptop has no specific "Mic" or 
"Line-in" controls, only a master input and output controls.  At least I 
can hear the news through my desktop.  As bad as it is.
