Reinstalling GDM hassles

I recently installed gdm2setup. Next thing my gdm greeter freezes. It 
shows the user but no place to enter password. If I click on user it 
freezes up. I can still move the special menu but reboot or exit menu 
also freezes. I've tried reinstalling several times. Each time the same. 
I've also tried deleting /usr/share/gdm, but no luck.

Tried downgrading to GDM 2.0, but it was terrible. I can still log in 
with KDM.

Any suggestions?
