I agree.  I'd also observe that a correct functioning mic input is extremely sensitive.  Assuming you have a correct mic in config 
the signal would have to be VERY faint to not be useful.

How exactly are you trying to record the phone conversations?

Talking through a SIP device /service / interface might allow mp3 recordings e.g. see PBX in a flash.
