I had the same issue with my Alienware m15x. Can't recall how I fixed
it without being at the machine itself. Will check tonight.

It was a show-stopper for me as I use the laptop on the quiet coach of
the train every week and thus needed to be able to mute the speakers
to avoid being lynched by other passengers.
