How to check which wireless protocol is in use? Wicd?

Thanks! It looks like I have some reading to do: they all show as 802.11i.

According to wikipedia 802.11i is WPA (I think, I still need to read),
does that mean that when an access point is broadcasting via WPA
others cannot tell which protocol (-g, -n) is in use? Or am I
completely not understanding things?
