I've been running Lucid in a VirtualBox for some time now.  No
installation (to HD) necessary and you can wipe it out and start over
without any heartache.  I only wish that I could upgrade /from/ my
VirtualBox installation to my existing Karmic-on-hard-drive when the
time comes for the real upgrade instead of having to DL everything once
again.

Try the VirtualBox installation.  You might like trying it out that
way first.  It's much easier to know when it is time for /you/ to
upgrade then.
