Please try again with VLC. I have experienced better performance with it 
compared to mplayer.

Other than that I cannot give you any suggestions without more 
information about your hardware and the type of media you're playing. I 
don't know if the movie Casablanca is already old enough that the 
copyrights are expired, but if they are you could upload it somewhere 
(legally) so that others can test on the same identical file.
