For what it's worth, I absolutely hated it when Xorg removed the
static Xorg.conf requirement in favor of probing for this very reason.
 And it's not just low-end KVMs that have problems passing information
through.  I've had the same issues before on systems connected to very
high-end enterprise level KVMs as well.
