To start with, ignore anything Karl says. He cannot give good advice,
leave alone researching something if he doesn't know about it.

First, make sure you upgrade to the latest version, if not you haven't
done already (3.0.1).
Start up the player and check the USB Controller option. There you
will see three options. Make sure that you have "Enable high-speed
support", "Automatically connect new devices" are both ticked. You
might like to tick the third one.
Finally start the VM and then plug the device and when a window pops
up you will know that the device is recognised. Finally make sure that
it is "connected". I found not all devices connect sometimes.

The last thing is, I always found USB disk performance pretty low. You
might like to turn on file sharing on the VM (Virtual Machine Settings
-> Options -> Shared Folders -> Enable) and mount your external disk
onto your normal environment and share it as such. I found the
performance is significantly better on my Dell Latitute laptop when
used like this.
