Zero Bytes free on my hard drive

I am watching disk activity with gnome-system-monitor and all is quiet.

I did notice that Nautilus reports 41.2 GB free no matter what I do,
until it hits zero and starts crashing programs of course.

I have checked this disk and there are zero errors on it.
