Out of curiosity, what are you using to get into the disk to delete
things if you can't boot the system?
Are you using the Live CD?
What happens if you try a live disk from a different distro like
Fedora, or a different Ubuntu based distro like Crunchbang, or perhaps
Knoppix?
Do they ALL report weird disk usage like that? Or are you only seeing
this weird usage in the installed system that's giving you problems?
