If the machines are on the same lan, and lan is trusted (ie, not worried 
about encrypting data over the local network), then I would strongly 
suggest using simply xdmcp built in to X since... err, forever.


You can also tunnel that over ssh or or openvpn if you want.  VNC or NX 
are really only needed for high latency links, such as Internet use.  (X 
really doesn't handle lag at all.. even a good wireless link will be iffy)
