I've had pretty much the same experience... however I have had karmic
lock up/freeze completely (i.e. not just X) on me repeatedly for no
discernible reason on a laptop... no detectable hardware issues (RAM,
HDD ok, etc...). The cause ended up being a buggy driver for the video
card (the FOSS Driver), but I ended up downgrading to 8.04 for the
convenience of upgrading in a few months, and the problem went away.
