Proper way install GNOME into KUbuntu 10.4 system - avoiding configuration conflicts? ; jor

What is the proper way to install & set up the Ubuntu 10.4 GNOME system (display & applications) into a KUbuntu 10.4 system?  

Particular concern being that the two systems don't conflict, & compete in overwriting system settings, like, for example, the X window configurations.

Basically, I have this KUbuntu 10.4 desktop system.  I'd like to be able to log out of a running KDE session, then log into a GNOME session. (Then, while in the GNOME session I'll investigate to see if my bug from my KDE session occurs also in the GNOME session.)  But, I want to be sure that when I do these things:
1) Install the GNOME desktop to the KUbuntu 10.4 system, &
2) Log into a GNOME desktop session,
that:
important system settings used by KDE aren't overwritten by the GNOME system.

Particularly, I'm thinking XOrg settings are likely candidates for conflict.  But, perhaps there are others that could cause problems too.

I'd prefer to install the least GNOME stuff possible to accomplish this task - ie, I don't need lots of gnome applications.  But, i do need the basic gnome desktop, & I need the gnome configuration GUI tools, equivalent to the KDE "System Settings" tool, which is a GUI interface tool to change settings like for the video display adapter parameters, the desktop configuration, etc.

I'd prefer a minimal install so that I don't have 
1) such a large sw download, &
2) unneded applications, which might cause some potential conflicts.

That is the complete question.  For reference purposes, below is a description of the motivation for me wanting to accomplish this.  Basically, I'm having strange behavior with the KDE desktop, & would like to see if the problem does or does not also occur in the GNOME desktop - in order to see if this is a KDE or XOrg problem, through elimination of variable.

I'm having some strange behavior on the KDE desktop, after I switched monitors.  Here's the problem I'm currently in process of seeking a resolution to through the KUbuntu, KDE & XOrg lists. :

I just switched from a vga to dvi monitor, & am now having this problem,
on KUbuntu 10.4.

When i move my mouse pointer down to the bottom of the screen, which is
supposed to pop up the task bar, all the applications on screen
disappear, & there is only a blank desktop with the task bar showing.

When I move my mouse pointer along the bottom of the screen, about every
quarter inch of screen movement the all the apps appear, then disappear,
again & again.

Anyone heard of anything like this?

I was using a sony vga monitor, & switched to a 5 yr old apple cinema
LCD DVI display, with a higher resolution.  I tested the monitor dual
head for several days, setting it to "clone" the display from the vga
monitor, & didn't see this happening.  When I removed the vga monitor,
this started happening.

Note: this is not me accidentally hitting the other "desktop" selectors.
 This will happen when the mouse is at the bottom middle of the screen,
nowhere near the other 'desktop' selector icons, which are at the left
bottom of the screen.

This looks like a bug somewhere, cause I doubt this could be a
"setting".  Where's the bug? KDE? X?
