Follow the instructions others have provided for grub2 (gksudo gedit
/etc/default/grub change GRUB_DEFAULT to the value you wish [1]).
However a GUI might be easier for you. Are you still at the friend's
w/internet access? If so:
$ sudo apt-get install startupmanager
Then System|Administration|Startup-manager
You can then easily select the default. If you're no longer at the
friend's place, I can email you the startupmanager .deb file - it's only
117kB. However, it depend on:
#grub-pc
GRand Unified Bootloader, version 2 (PC/BIOS version)
or grub
GRand Unified Bootloader
#dep: menu
generates programs menu for all menu-aware applications
#dep: python
An interactive high-level object-oriented language (default version)
#dep: python-central (>= 0.6.11)
register and build utility for Python packages
#dep: python-glade2 (>= 2.12)
GTK+ bindings: Glade support
#dep: python-gnome2 (>= 2.20)
Python bindings for the GNOME desktop environment
#dep: python-libxml2 (>= 2.6.30)
Python bindings for the GNOME XML library
#dep: yelp
Help browser for GNOME 2
so check to see if you have those already installed (you most likely do
with the exception of 'menu' & I can send you that as well if need be).

Rather than quoting from the
<https://help.ubuntu.com/community/Grub2#/etc/default/grub> page, I'll
just email you a pdf will the entire page so that you can read. Note:
I'm assuming you're back home & are back to email only access.
