Upgrade and logout issues

I just upgraded a machine to 10.04, and now when I log out. The session
hags, and does not exit. I get a black screen for a few seconds, and then
the background image comes back up, and stays up. If I ssh in,who does not
report me as loged in for the local session, and I see the following in the
process tbale:

root       958     1  0 Jun16 ?        00:00:00 kdm
root     17738 17731  0 08:11 ?        00:00:00 /usr/lib/kde4/libexec/kdm_greet

If I kill these, kdm does not restart.

How can I fix this?
