Well, a laptop is hardly something which you would call a desktop (unit) 
:-) .

In any case, you can check what is using the CPU and how much by looking 
at System>Administration>System Monitor.

Also, do you have all the nice compiz Visual Effects activated? If so, 
do you really need them as they do take up CPU capacity?
