I don't do anything.. I just set my default audio output in my music 
player, xine, and mplayer to alsa, and was able to get them all going 
simultaneously.  (this was in the days before pulse, the test is moot 
now, since on a modern system, default alsa device is pulse.)  It just 
always worked.
