It's fine so long as you don't share *user account* home directories
between different distros using the same desktop.

E.g. a shared /home, PC dual-booting Ubuntu 9 & 10, use 2 accounts.
Dual-booting Ubuntu & Kubuntu, no problem - the different desktops
won't stomp each other's settings. Dual-booting Mint & Ubuntu (both
GNOME), use 2 accounts.

If the 2(+) distros use different desktops, fine, share an account.
Settings in /home/alice won't affect /home/bob & /vice versa/.

If the distros use the same desktop, it's best to use different
accounts, so that (say) Ubuntu 9'a GNOME settings won't stomp Ubuntu
10's & /vice versa/.

It's easier, cleaner & "more standard" UNIX practice to regard /home
as the data filesystem and keep everything in there.
