visual effects problem

I think that laptop uses this chipset:
Intel Corporation 82845G/GL[Brookdale-G]/GE Chipset

Quite a few problems w/lucid & Intel.

I know those are related to 'freezes', but might still be worth a look.
It's possible that one of the workarounds has been applied & in the
process compiz/visual effects may have been turned off.
