I've googled "bzip2 returned an error" and almost always it is cured
by changing the /etc/apt/sources.list file to point at different
mirrors. It would seem to me that the usual cause is the mirror no
longer being maintained. Since this cannot be the case with
us.archive.ubuntu.com then I'm beginning to think you are right about
the ethernet driver.
