How to disable the internal speaker in Lucid

Thank you all for your answers.

Regrettably - none worked....

I did install the gnome alsamixer which does look a lot more like the KMix I
was used to.

Here is what I've learnt:

1. My sound card is identified as Realtek ALC888
2. I have the Speaker, PCM and Beep - when I mute any of them, the master
volume is also muted (i.e.: no sound from the external speakers too).

How do I make sure pulseAudio is set up correctly for my card?

Is there a GUI, or better yet - can you direct me to the right configuration
file and what to change it to?
