REPOST- Having the date format shown correctly in Lucid (and Maverick)

Many thanks!

I have it now set to-

%a %d %b %y %H:%M:%S


But the *real* secret to success is to ensure that the parameter 
'format' is set to 'custom' (need to type this word in) and not whatever 
you chose during installation of Ubuntu.
