All though it is debatable that an Aussie can speak English.  :-)

The problem was not in Firefox or adobe, but in the fact that the
synaptic package manger sources.list had had the Ubuntu partner
repositories included twice.
Sorted out that, reinstalled the adobe flash player, updated to
Firefox 3.6.8
All fixed
