I was installing Lucid on my wife's computer a few days ago - I couldn't
do it, the CD would start to boot but when it came to actually "firing
up" Ubuntu itself to get the first menu which asks you if you want to
try it out or to install it....nada. Nothing. Zilch. Showed me the
two-fingered salute several times.
The reason?
It was the second HD which I was using in the installation - a 160GB
Seagate which was manufactured in China[1]. I took it out, replaced it
with another HD and Ubuntu was installed without any further hassles.
[1] Another identical 160GB Seagate but manufactured in Thailand works
perfectly - but this one made in China is a door stop. {I always buy HDs
as a matched pair - one for the OS and the other for /Data and backups}.
