2 different version 10.04

 to add more info,

I just updated the computer that does not shut off properly (it is not normally 
connected to the internet).  After the update, I shut it down by clicking on 
the shutdown icon.  It worked perfectly.  Then I started it up, opened a 
OpenOffice.org document by clicking on the document, not starting OO.  I closed 
the document, closed OO, then attempted to shut down by clicking the shut down 
icon.  no response to the 'are you sure' window.  I waited for at least 2 
minutes.  no change.  I opened a terminal, entered 'sudo halt' .  it asked for 
my password, that promptly shut down.
