password required when powersaving

Hi,
have just updated my desktop and laptop from 9.10  to  10.04
both are doing the same, when no activity the  monitor power saves, and
both machines then need to enter password to become active again.
Have checked the forums , but guess I don't know the right questions to ask.
Does anyone know of a fix for this. Both machines had controls reversed, 
but have fixed that.
