Old XP machine could mean that you don't have enough memory. I remember
similar sysmptoms from a low memory machine when I tried to install from
the LiveCD. According to [1] you need at least 256MB. If your machine
doesn't have that amount of memory you could try the alternate CD
instead or use another Ubuntu flavour like Xubuntu.
