Gimp works:

And I now find in that that it is necessary to logout/login after
installing 'Nautilus image converter' (as suggested by sktsee).

However, works better with gimp-plugin-registry
The package contains the following plugins:
  * David's Batch Processor (1.1.9):
    A simple batch processing plugin for The Gimp - it allows
    the user to automatically perform operations (such as resize)
    on a collection of image files.
To use, open Gimp, select 'Filters|Batch', add the files you wish to
batch convert, select 'Resize', adjust to what you want, then 'Output'
to select format, enjoy :-)
