thanks for the info links.  been there, and tried the "use the CLI to 
boot" area earlier today with no success.

sysnopsis-> fresh install of 10.04 server boots to grub prompt.  thats 
the problem.  this is the info i can give at this point.

grub>ls
(hd0) (hd0,1)

grub>set root=(hd0,1)

grub>linux /boot/vmlinuz root=/dev/sda1 ro
error: file not found

grub>cat /boot/grub/grub.cfg
error: out of disk

/ is sda1
swap is sda5
