good news!

"sudo aptitude --purge reinstall linux-sound-base alsa-base alsa-utils
linux-image-`uname -r` linux-ubuntu-modules-`uname -r` libasound2"
command appears to have fixed everything.  audacity is recording and
playing fine.  vlc/rhythmbox playing fine.  i can see the playback and
recording streams in the pulseaudio volume control.  so i think
everything is ok for now!

i found this command at [1], under "Refreshing/Reinstalling the drivers"
and i do not think the "linux-ubuntu-modules-`uname -r`" was necessary
in the command (for my case at least), as i received "Couldn't find any
package whose name or description matched
"linux-ubuntu-modules-2.6.28-17-generic""
