maybe i should just try upgrading to 9.10?
it doesn't make sense that i should need to run all these customized
scripts, reinstall latest ALSA from source, etc.
9.10 maybe still has lots of problems. i know there was a bug that
prevented the system loading if / partition was encrypted, but that
doesn't appear in the errata anymore. if that has been fixed, maybe
upgrading now is worth a try.
anyway, i noticed i had no "hardware output device" listed in the
pulseaudio volume control, so i tried:

now i can see "Xonar DX - Multichannel" in hardware output devices.
however, rhythmbox isn't playing anymore: see output above ("I:
protocol-native.c: Connection died.")
if i go to sound preferences and set device to "pulseaudio sound server"
then "test" i get error:
