Upgrade to 9.04 / No sound nor recording / Xonar DX

yes, probably.  i had sound problems when i installed 8.04 and/or
upgraded to 8.10.  back then i had a Soundblaster Audigy 2ZS as well as
on-board audio.  i got it to work with some tweaking.  then i got rid of
the Audigy and replaced it with the Xonar, disabled (in BIOS) and
blacklisted (in kernel modules) the on-board soundcard.

....so clearly i have tweaked some things.  it might be good no know how
to reset some things so i could be at a good starting point.
