Upgrade to 9.04 / No sound nor recording / Xonar DX

hi all,

i've upgraded to 9.04 and now i have no sound and no recording either.
the sound card is an Asus Xonar DX.  volume is up at maximum.  i tried
'alsamixer -Dhw' everything is at 100%.  i have system sounds turned off
and "no sound" for the theme.  i tried to kill and restart pulseaudio.
there is such a mishmash of suggestions out there i have tried.  can
anyone offer a more refined suggestion?
