Could Ubuntu 8.04 (Hardy) users install some packages in higher Ubuntu versions ?

You can update all of your sources, and do just the package upgrade, not the
distro upgrade. In this way you will stay with Hardy and will use new
software. To upgrade specified package use *apt-get install -u package_name*
