As per your window manager, is this a recurring issue?
for a simple one-time fix you can run this
metacity --replace 2>&1
or for compiz
compiz --replace 2>&1
or emerald
emerald --replace 2>&1

I'm not sure about the rest, but it sounds window manager related.
