Beginner Q1: Linux incapable of handling FDD? CONCLUDED

Yes, that is what I am using.
Yesterday night I had to reinstall 9.04 (Japanese version, because the 
9.10 live CDs somehow do not work).

This is partially relieving, since it verifies that the problem is not 
entirely due to my own stupidity.

The computer now asks me, if I want to "upgrade", but I have been 
advised NOT to (because I might get the same problems again).
Any thoughts about this situation?
