I think you mean it is this:

I read the full spec's of the HP Compaq NX9005
computer on Google. It has a AMD Athlon XP-M 2400+ running at
1.8GHz. It has 256 MB of RAM with a spare memory slot. It has
a cd-rom read-write and a 40GB hard drive. Display maximum is
1024x768 pixels.

This does not sound like the computer he told us
about as being his "HP nx9005" but for sure the Google data
from reviews.zdnet.co.uk is what it was like new. It is easy
to increase the RAM but he said he has replaced the cpu with
one from Intel. This might just be an error on his part.

Since it has a cd-rom reader he should be able to
download a liveCD of the Ubuntu version he desires and then
report if the liveCD looks good on his monitor. Then carry on
with an install.

If you can do this and write back what happened, we can help
you. Been there and done that.
