Xorg often taking a lot of CPU, whole system slow

I've seen similar symptoms on a box with an older ati video card.
I assumed it's something quirky with the card or driver,
and haven't gotten around to digging into this problem

The box is a half hour drive from here.  If anyone is interested
I can check the exact model, etc., next time I visit there.
