Yep.

Seems I can't run update-manager, /usr/bin/software-properties-gtk,
etc., etc. Same errors. I've also check & it's not a user config, as the
other user accounts (including root) do the same.

The machine has been continually upgraded (and messed with w/dpkg
installed programs etc) since edgy, so I reckon it's time to go ahead
and do an in-place install. I'll back up the home folders & just do
that. I'm too busy at the moment to go hunting python bugs; thanks anyway.
